Tectonic

Tectonic is a series of mixed-media paintings that represent large-scale movements on the Earth’s surface. They are abstract bird's-eye views showing three different large-scale movements that take place: lava from a volcano, a glacier, and a tide coming in.

I created this series of paintings using acrylic with mediums to create texture and depth.

Lava

An abstract mixed media painting of a lava flow. There is a channel of lava shown flowing from the top to the bottom of the painting and branching off to the right hand side of the painting. This lava flow is painted in yellow moving to read towards the edges. It Was painted with texture paste so that there are lines of texture running across the lava to represent the slow movement of this molten rock. To the left hand side and also the top and bottom right hand side of the painting or dark grey rock. This was painted using crackle paste so these areas have cracks within the paint and the cracks have red paint within them to show lava beneath this solidifying rock.

Crevasse

An abstract mixed media painting of a Birdseye view of a crack within a glacier. On both the left and right hand sides of the painting or areas of textured white and pale blue paint to represent the frozen water of the glacier. Running in a curved line down the centre of the painting is a deep blue area to show a crevasse running through the glacier where we can glimpse the fast flowing water below.

Crevasse depicts a deep fissure in a slowly moving glacier, giving a glimpse down to the faster-flowing water below.

Tide

Mixed media abstract painting of the view from above of a beach and an ocean. The lower section of the painting is created with textured sand gel added to the paint. This creates a textured area to depict the beach towards the top of this textured area the sand colour becomes darker where the sand would be wet with the water that’s crashing up onto the shore. The top section of the painting shows dark blue water with five waves painted in lighter shades of blue and foamy white crests moving towards the sand.
